Sprinter Tiny Home
Convertible Living Space
Recently, I have noticed the increase of both “Sprinter” style delivery vans and the desire for compact living spaces or “tiny homes”. I have always been drawn to the idea of designing an “off the grid” domicile that feels organized and comfortable. Most vehicle conversions consist of adapting home cabinetry, kitchens, and other elements into the constrained space of the cargo van. This approach is an effort to create a single, multi-functional structure that is well integrated and efficently designed.
Kitchen
The design goal for the kitchen space was to minimize the complexity of the domestic kitchen, yet still provide for a range of cooking options. While this space can be configured to accommodate whatever needs an occupant may have.
A two basin sink would allow for food prep and a wash basin. The two burner stove has a fold down lid to cover the burners when not in use and provide additional prep space.
An under counter refrigerator and a counter top convection oven would make this an incredibly functional space.
Murphy beds
It seems the most efficient concept for bedding would be a solution that could be stowed away while not in use. A “Murphy” style bed design, as employed here, solves this problem effectively while also keeping the supporting structural wall relatively shallow relative to the width of the van’s interior.
Below the sleeping platform is ample storage for clothes, and other supplies.
The Garage
In order to keep everything organized and accessible, it was important to be able to isolate gear or supplies that would otherwise clutter the living space. I wanted to have a space that was accessible from inside and outside for storing gear and supplies. Here I have shown a “rack” system for stowing gear that would increase the usable space and provide for easy access to items at “floor” level without having to remove items stored above.
Making this area a bit larger could easily accommodate a shower unit.
